Legal separation does not restore the parties to the status of unmarried persons. Some people chose legal separation instead of dissolution for religious and/or personal reasons that include but are not limited to the following: maintenance of medical insurance coverage, assuming such coverage remains to be available after the judgment is entered, qualification for derivative social security benefit, and qualification of some benefits available for military spouses.
